Cuban baritone Ramón Calzadilla dies in Mexico at the age of 90
Cuban baritone Ramón Calzadilla died this weekend at the age of 90, in Mexico, where he lived, informed the governmental National Council for the Performing Arts.
Mexico's Centro Morelense de las Artes expressed its sorrow for the musician's death, since Calzadilla worked as a teacher at that institution.
Calzadilla was one of the most internationally recognized Cuban baritones. During his extensive career he worked in opera houses and concert halls in Cuba, Canada, the United States, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain and Mexico.
Ramón Calzadilla was born in Havana, Cuba, and began his musical studies at the Hubert de Blanck Conservatory.
He later perfected his singing skills at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome and at the Ciprian Porumbescu Conservatory in Bucharest.
He was baritone soloist of the Cuban National Opera from 1969 to 1980 and until 1991 he was a member of the Música de Conciertos group. He also taught singing at the National School of Arts and founded the Singing Department at the current University of the Arts (ISA).
The Cuban artist received the Beniamino Gigli International Singing Competition Prize and the Jury Prize at the City of Rome Competition in Italy in 1960. Two years later he won the First Prize at the International Singing Competition in Toulouse, France.
