Independent journalist Camila Acosta detained in Cuba
The Cuban regime arrested this Sunday independent journalist Camila Acosta in Cárdenas, in the province of Matanzas, when she was going to visit relatives of political prisoners in that municipality.
According to CubaNet, at the time of Acosta's arrest, she was with political prisoner Pedro de la Caridad Alvarez Pedroso.
Acosta was detained for one hour at a police station in Cardenas. She was then taken back to Havana in several patrol cars, without being able to interview family members, as she had planned for her journalistic work.
"They took me in another patrol car to the Bacunayagua bridge. In Bacunayagua, about ten minutes later another patrol arrived, they put me in that other patrol to the checkpoint there, at the entrance to Guanabo, coming from Matanzas to here. And there they took me down again and put me in another patrol car all the way here, to my house," the journalist said.
The reporter regretted that, despite the crisis facing the country, the dictatorship uses resources to repress dissident voices.
Acosta reaffirmed that she will continue to stand firm in her work of reporting as an independent journalist.
The reporter has been repressed on several occasions by the Castro dictatorship. Last June CubaNet reported that she was missing.
On July 12, 2021, she was detained for her coverage of the anti-government protests that took place on July 11 in Havana. State Security held her captive until the 16th of that month. Upon her release, she was informed that a judicial process was open against her and that she could not leave her home.
In May 2022, after more than 10 months of house arrest, the journalist was released from charges.
