Cuba will send 123 doctors to Mexico despite the shortage of specialists on the island.
The Mexican Government announced that it will reinforce its health system with the arrival of 123 Cuban doctors in addition to the 768 currently working in the Health Services of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), in spite of the shortage of specialists the island is facing.

According to the portal Eje Central, authorities from both countries held a meeting where it was informed that there are 768 Cuban doctors working in units of the Health Services of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) for the Welfare in Mexican territory.

The Minister of Public Health of the Cuban regime, José Ángel Portal Miranda, said that the new doctors sent are trained in areas such as Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Emergencies.

For his part, Zoé Robledo, director of Mexican Social Security, described this collaboration as a high point in Mexico-Cuba relations and explained that the presence of doctors from the island has made it possible to cover medical needs in 23 states included in IMSS Bienestar.

Robledo detailed that, through the agreement with Havana, they seek to reach a total of 1,200 specialized Cuban doctors working in areas of difficult access in those 23 states.

In January 2024, the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador paid the Cuban regime 10,700 dollars per month for each of the 585 doctors and health specialists who arrived in Mexico during the pandemic.

Norma Julieta del Río Venegas, commissioner of the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI), revealed that Mexico paid a total of $11.4 million dollars to Cuba for sending the doctors.

The report states that Havana gave the doctors "600 dollars for three months and that the rest will be covered by the Mexican Government".

INAI urged the Welfare Bank to provide clarity on these payments, since, according to what it reads, the regime kept 94.4% of the money paid by Mexico. But the Bank declared itself incompetent to provide such information.

In May 2022, Mexico and Cuba signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation in health, exchange of medical personnel and medical assistance in different areas.

The economic benefit of this agreement has been exclusive to Castroism. Cuba's "internationalist" medical missions are considered a form of modern slavery.
