Russia could deploy nuclear weapons in Cuba: Kremlin military expert
The Kremlin's military expert, Alexander Sharkovsky, declared that Russia could deploy nuclear weapons in Cuba, as it happened in 1962.
Sharkovsky explained to the Absatz news agency that on the island “the base of the Russian armed forces, both land and naval, is already being recreated. If dry cargo ships are used, [nuclear] missiles can get there again, as was the case in 1962.”
“Since the United States intends to deploy its medium-range missiles on German territory, it means that our missiles should be somewhere near the United States. This is a very important strategic reserve for the security of the Russian Federation,” the expert added.
The official said that the Russian Navy will have its permanent base on the island only if the White House deploys its missile systems in European countries.
This week the Cuban regime announced that three Russian warships of the Baltic Fleet will visit the port of Havana between July 27 and 30.
The fleet consists of the training ship Smolniy, the patrol vessel Neustrashimiy and the deepwater tanker Yelnya, the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba (MINFAR) reported.
“As we have pointed out on other occasions, visits by naval units from other countries are a historical practice of the revolutionary government with nations that maintain relations of friendship and collaboration,” the MINFAR statement added.
The Russian sailors will visit the head of the Revolutionary Navy and the governor of the capital, and will also visit places of 'historical and cultural interest'.
Also, last June, a grouping of Russian Navy ships, including a nuclear-powered submarine, visited the port of Havana.
